Richard E. Dover and Team Begin Work on Historic Alexander Inn

Richard E. Dover
Knoxville-based Richard E. Dover has been the general manager of the Family Pride Corporation for 20 years. Throughout his tenure, Richard E. Dover has been involved in numerous complex historic renovation projects, including the Carmichael Inn and Orme Wilson buildings in Knox County, among others. Currently, Mr. Dover is directing the conversion of the Alexander Inn (previously known as the Guest House), which he discusses in the following Q&A.

Q: What is the purpose of the Alexander Inn renovation?

Richard E. Dover: The team at Family Pride Corporation is honored to be preserving the remarkable, historic Alexander Inn. Through historic preservation and conversion, we are creating a senior residence to serve the growing number of older adults in Knoxville, which will provide affordable homes to so many.

Q: Is the Alexander Inn renovation a difficult project?

Richard E. Dover: Any historic preservation project comes with its share of challenges. In this particular case, the Alexander Inn was in utter disrepair when we began the project. The building had sat empty for so long that the structure literally started to crumble. So, yes, the project is intense, but the rewards for the city will be well worth the efforts. And, this is what we do; this is what we are known for.

Q: When is the project slated for completion and what will the resulting facility include?

Richard E. Dover: Family Pride closed on the property in May of this year and work began shortly after. Knox Heritage has been a wonderful partner in getting the property ready for the sale and for the start of renovation. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2014 and will include 60 separate residences for older adults and a specialized memory care unit.
